Poaching of Israeli wildlife by guest workers
نویسنده
چکیده
Movement of people from thirdto first-world countries frequently brings with it different, and often opposing, approaches to wildlife. About 22,000 Thai workers are currently employed in Israel, mostly in agriculture. Most of these workers originate from the poor Isaan region in northeast Thailand, where the major source of income is from agriculture, supplemented by gathering and hunting of animals. In Israel, many of them engage in illegal hunting and gathering of wildlife. At least 28 species of mammals (including six domestic ones), 25 species of birds, seven species of reptiles, three species of amphibians and various species of fish, molluscs and other invertebrates have been found mainly in traps (chiefly noose traps) laid by Thai workers. Other methods of capture used by the workers include the use of hand-held catapults, netting, the collection of bird eggs, and the gathering of slowmoving vertebrates and invertebrates. These activities have a serious deleterious effect on the wildlife in Israel. # 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Predicting poaching for wildlife Protection
Wildlife species such as tigers and elephants are under the threat of poaching. To combat poaching, conservation agencies (“defenders”) need to (1) anticipate where the poachers are likely to poach and (2) plan effective patrols. We propose an anti-poaching tool CAPTURE (Comprehensive Anti-Poaching tool with Temporal and observation Uncertainty REasoning), which helps the defenders achieve both...
متن کاملCommunity Perceptions and Attitudes Regarding Wildlife Crime in South Africa
Wildlife crime is a complex problem with many interconnected facets, which are generally responded to in parts or fragments in efforts to “break down” the complexity into manageable components. However, fragmentation increases complexity as coherence and cooperation become diluted. A whole-of-society approach has been developed towards finding a common goal and integrated approach to preventing...
متن کاملAdaptive resource allocation for wildlife protection against illegal poachers
Illegal poaching is an international problem that leads to the extinction of species and the destruction of ecosystems. As evidenced by dangerously dwindling populations of endangered species, existing anti-poaching mechanisms are insufficient. This paper introduces the Protection Assistant for Wildlife Security (PAWS) application a joint deployment effort done with researchers at Uganda’s Quee...
متن کاملA conceptual framework for understanding illegal killing of large carnivores
The growing complexity and global nature of wildlife poaching threaten the survival of many species worldwide and are outpacing conservation efforts. Here, we reviewed proximal and distal factors, both social and ecological, driving illegal killing or poaching of large carnivores at sites where it can potentially occur. Through this review, we developed a conceptual social-ecological system fra...
متن کاملReal‐time anti‐poaching tags could help prevent imminent species extinctions
At an estimated $7–10 billion annually, the global trade in illegal wildlife parts is comparable in economic value to human trafficking, and the smuggling of weapons and drugs (Wasser et al. 2008; Wyler & Sheikh 2013). Basic economic principles of supply and demand ensure that, as target species become ever rarer, their market value continues to rise, gradually pushing them towards extinction (...
